Living Planet Report 2022 Reads Vertebrates Declined An Average Of 69%

From 1970 to 2018, monitored populations of vertebrates declined an average of 69%. That’s more than two-thirds in only 48 years. It’s a staggering figure with serious implications, especially as nations prepare to meet in Montreal this December in an effort to agree on a new global plan to protect biodiversity.

Biodiversity loss is a problem becoming increasingly serious and irreparable. Natural decline is not only a threat today, but also for future generations. For this reason, the organizations WWF and ZSL have produced a report that raises awareness and educates people on the subject, in order to promote a nature-positive society.

The general content of the report consists of the relationship between climate change and ecological balance. The connection between both phenomena has a great impact on the future of the planet and  nature, as they are dependent on each other. For this edition, academics and researchers concluded that there is no single great solution and no single source of knowledge to address the problem.

Thus, it is presented that the destruction and fragmentation of natural habitats are the greatest threats to the planet, the misuse of land is what ends with many plants and wildlife. The extinction of animal species is also of concern because of the local changes that may arise. Losing a species completely means an imbalance in the ecosystem that impacts commercial activities and the wellbeing of communities. One example is the increase in pests that can damage crops.

At the international level, governments and environmental organizations want to maintain global temperatures at 1.5 C°, but with the loss of biodiversity, the increase in degrees Celsius will be uncontrollable. The tracking of these natural changes has developed along with the technological increase. The Living Planet Index is a biodiversity indicator that calculates the abundance of species, which helps to understand and deal with what we are facing.

"This edition shows an average 69% decline in the relative abundance of monitored wildlife populations around the world between 1970 and 2018"

New mapping methods are used, depending on the region. However, the analyses have the same goal of creating a comprehensive picture of the reality of biodiversity and climate. On the one hand, with these tools professionals are able to create future scenarios and possible outcomes of what could happen to the planet. And on the other hand, researchers could generate ideas and immediate actions with a much more specific and effective target.

The Living Planet Report is a means by which this year's environmental organizations confirm the loss of biodiversity and the climate crisis. It is also a work that offers knowledge to create transformational change, which refers to a game-changing shift in citizens. From the way we produce to our consumption habits, the report proposes daily life goals, values and rights that respect the environment.

It is important to consider that this research does not simply apply to individuals but can also be aimed at governments, organizations and companies. Get inspired and be part of the change by reading the Living Planet Report!
