LUKHANYO MDINGI

-- --

Lukhanyo Mdingi belongs to the young generation, representing the great creative energies of Africa. After winning the LVMH Karl Lagerfeld 2021 award, he presented his first collection during the Autumn/Winter 2022 season in Paris. The designer declares: "For me, it is design as a way to make a social impact, working with extraordinary communities of craftspeople, so they too can have essentially a better life. That’s what it comes down to." Mdingi collaborated with the Ethical Fashion Initiative led by Simone Cipriani, for the creation of his first collection. He has, indeed, worked to procure his fabrics and knitwear from marginalized communities of artisans in Burkina Faso, Somalia, and closer to home in the Eastern Cap. Mohair, for example, comes from South African goat farms. The designer creates clothes that can be matched with and on everything, enhancing South African know-how.
