Huong Nguyen, Charlotte Bakkenes, Frederieke Broekgaarden and Eva Sonneveld comprise the group of four emerging designers, who have created different garments and accessories to show the promising potential of new sustainable materials. Some of the biomaterials incorporated into the pieces include orange peel silk, circular vegan leather from cork powder and coconuts, and fibers from banana plants.
To accompany the garments is beautiful visual and written storytelling that captured the entire behind the scenes process of the exhibition from content creatives, Christian Mpamo and Zainab Goelaman. In addition to the work of the young Dutch design talent, creations from Dutch couturier Iris van Herpen and fashion designer and illustrator Karim Adduchi are also on display, as both designers explore the use of sustainable materials in their work.
Although nature is often a source of inspiration in the fashion world, the current fashion system exploits it to a dangerous degree as it is one of the most polluting industries in the world. With a need to change, Fashion for Good initiated the “GROW talent” project, resulting in this new exhibition to start the discourse of innovative, sustainable technologies in the field of textiles.
Despite these materials being unknown to the general public or not yet available in stores, the innovators and designers behind this exhibition make the future of fashion tangible for visitors with these garments and allow the public to experience these new sustainable materials up close.
GROW: The Future of Fashion can be seen from October 29, 2021 to April 2022.
