Healing Frequencies: Science or Hype?
A recent study published in the International Journal for Research in Applied Science & Engineering Technology indicates that sound frequencies can synchronise with the body’s natural vibrations, fostering cellular harmony and well-being.
By exposing the body to specific external frequencies, brain activity can be guided to states of relaxation, enhanced focus, or deep sleep. Notably, low-frequency sound stimulation has been shown to activate the vagus nerve, which helps lower heart rate and blood pressure.

But to better understand this mechanism, it is fundamental to know the difference between frequency and brainwave state.
A frequency is the speed of the brain’s electrical activity, meaning how fast the waves are moving per second. A brainwave state is the speed of that electrical activity, hence the name for a range of frequencies that correspond to certain mental states like deep sleep or high focus.
For instance, frequency 4–8 Hz has been linked to the Theta brainwave state, which promotes emotional healing and can help treat anxiety.
Additionally, researchers observe that vibroacoustic tools have demonstrated benefits in reducing inflammation and improving mobility for patients with arthritis and fibromyalgia.

In an interview with U of T News, he explains the mechanism behind it as such: “Several medical conditions including Parkinson’s and neuralgic pain like fibromyalgia, may be related to a common brain mechanism — a brain rhythm disorientation between the inner brain and the outer cortex. Since the rhythmic pulses of music can drive and stabilize these, we speculate that low frequency sound might help.”
