Understanding Crochet | Everything You Need To Know
Once associated with grandmas and hippies, crochet is now trending. Crochet is all over social media, crafted by independent designers, people at home and high-end fashion brands. Learn more about this trend below.
WHAT IS CROCHETING?
Crocheting is the process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of material using a special crochet needle. Unlike knitting, which uses two needles, crocheting only uses one hook. Lots of materials can be used to crochet, including yarn, thread, and other strands. Crochet can make many different things, from clothing to blankets, with the hook coming in different sizes to match the material being used. The adaptability and creativity of crocheting means that it can be easily learned and used to create both basic clothing and expressive art forms.
THE CROCHETTING TREND
In recent years, crochet’s popularity has boomed. Crocheting regained popularity in lockdown when people were looking for activities that could be enjoyed at home. It is also proven to reduce anxiety through the therapeutic and repetitive motions it requires.
Since lockdown, Instagram and TikTok have become hubs for the wholesome world of crocheting. These platforms are filled with people showcasing their designs, selling patterns for others to follow, and teaching users how to start. The internet and social media have provided a space where people can easily learn and connect over their passion for crochet.
Crochet is also being embraced by high-end designers, with names such as Stella McCartney and Dolce and Gabbana incorporating crochet items into their collections. This blend of personal hobby and high fashion highlights the versatility and enduring appeal of crochet.
IS IT SUSTAINABLE?
Because crochet is slow fashion it’s naturally sustainable. It takes a long time to make something out of crochet, even if you are an expert. People are more likely to keep their clothes for longer if they have spent the time making it themselves. You can also recycle clothing by taking apart old items and using the material to crochet yourself something new. It is important to keep the scraps of your projects and make something out of them since such small pieces of material often can’t be recycled. But since crochet has become increasingly popular, there is also a growth of sustainable wool and materials that you can use.
Crochet stops becoming sustainable when it is overproduced. Unlike knitting, crochet cannot be done with a machine. This means that all crochet pieces are made by hand. Because crochet has become so popular in recent years, fast fashion brands are also selling items. Crochet takes a long time to make and the speed of fast fashion cycles and this lengthy process do not match. When buying clothing made from crochet you should consider the time it takes to make such a piece. Buying a top for less than €10 is a clear sign of exploitative labour and that someone is being underpaid and overworked.
