Everyone’s vaginal health is unique, with different sensitivities and different needs. Understanding your body and how to care for it is key to maintaining balance.

Your vaginal PH is a scale between 0-14 that measures the acidity to alkalinity of your vagina, and it should be between 3.8 to 4.5. The vaginal microbiome, also called vaginal flora, are the natural bacteria that can help maintain this balance.

Maintaining a balanced and healthy vaginal environment is crucial for overall well-being. When your vagina becomes unbalanced, you risk developing infections including yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis (BV). These are incredibly common and easy to cure; most women develop at least one in their lifetime.

However, there are many things you can do to keep your vagina balanced and healthy. We’ve made a list of natural ways to help you maintain your balance easily in your day-to-day life.

FOOD

A lot of your vaginal health is influenced by your gut. Having a healthy balance of bacteria in your gut supports having a healthy balance in your vagina. Probiotics are good bacteria that boost your immune system and protect your skin and brain health. They are also key to your vaginal health. Foods naturally high in probiotics, such as yoghurts and fermented foods, are great choices. A balanced diet for your vagina should also include ingredients high in beneficial nutrients like avocados, leafy greens, cranberries and sweet potatoes. It is also important to limit processed foods, alcohol and refined sugars to enable a healthy vagina.

SOAP

Some people believe that to have a clean vagina, you need to wash with soap. This is not the case. Your vagina is very sensitive, and often soaps are filled with chemicals that can do more harm than good. The best way to clean your vulva is to use warm water and a PH-balanced wash.

CLOTHING

Choosing the right clothing is essential for vaginal health. Breathable fabrics like cotton allow your vagina to breathe. Tight-fitting clothes and synthetic materials like nylon and polyester can trap heat and moisture, creating an environment where yeast infections thrive.

Sometimes you can’t avoid wearing tight clothing, such as when you’re exercising or at the beach. In these cases, it’s always better to change when you can. Bringing a spare bikini to change into after swimming can also help avoid irritation.

MENSTRUAL PRODUCTS

Unfortunately, many menstrual products are filled with chemicals that can harm your vaginal health. Tampons often contain toxic chemicals and are typically bleached with chlorine. These chemicals can disrupt the natural balance of your vaginal microbiome and cause irritation.

Most menstrual products are disposable. Products such as pads and tampons are made of plastics and non-biodegradable materials that harm the environment. To protect your health and the environment, you should switch to organic or reusable products. More and more brands are prioritising the environment and the natural health of your vagina, using less chemicals and biodegradable packaging. Reusable options like menstrual cups and period pants are also excellent eco-friendly alternatives that are kinder on your vulva.
