JAWARA ALLEYNE

-- --

London College of Fashion graduate, the Jamaican designer Jawara Alleyne explores the cultural conceptions of masculinity through his collections. Having a well-defined identity can be a difficult goal to achieve, especially when it comes to the fashion industry. This is not the case of Jawara, who has been questioning his identity for quite some time now and who makes diversity his most powerful weapon. His Jamaican roots have been a great inspiration for the designer, when it comes to sustainability, which he explains it is something intrinsic to him: "I wouldn’t consider myself a sustainable designer, but as a designer coming from the Caribbean, sustainability is something that comes naturally to us as growing up within that society, reusing, repurposing, upcycling are all just embedded in the way we society is built". As something that comes naturally, he transforms dead stock, vintage and fabrics scraps into up-cycled and regenerated clothes, sometimes draped, other times held together by safety pins. Menswear for Alleyne means comfort, but mostly freedom to be.
