Why Does Skin Behave Differently In The Winter? What Ingredients to Look For and What To Change Naturally
Why does our skin become dryer, or more irritated in the winter? Why doesn’t this happen in the summer? There are factors we can naturally include to prevent this. Synthetic skincare products or ingredients should be avoided and opting for skin care products with organic or plant-based ingredients may help with reducing dryness and irritation.
Why is it important to care for the skin? The skin is the largest organ in the body, with over 20 physiological functions. The skin is a physical barrier from harmful substances, can recognize sensations and pain, and helps to regulate temperature. However, when the skin behaves differently in the winter months, it can become demotivating or stressful to try to care for the skin.
How Does Skin React to Winter Conditions?
In the winter, skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema tend to worsen. This is because of cold temperatures, low humidity and dryer air. These conditions can dry out the skin and make symptoms more severe. Because of this, it is recommended to avoid soaps in the winter and to moisturize the skin more frequently. Different types of moisturizers are necessary in the winter compared to summer, to add a heavier, protective layer from the dry air.
People without skin conditions can also experience skin changes in the winter. In a recent study, women’s skin on their cheek and forearm was compared in winter and summer months. In the winter, skin on the cheek was dryer and more prone to redness than in the summer. Skin on the forearm was not as affected because it can be easily covered. How can we prevent dryness and redness in areas that are harder to cover?

Differences Between Conventional and Natural Skincare Products
Chemicals and synthetic ingredients that are used in many skincare products can trigger various allergies, reactions or illnesses. However, these are not as common with plant-based or natural ingredients. According to the NSF, 74% of consumers consider organic products to be important in personal care products. Natural skincare products can improve skin tone, skin texture and appearance because they deliver the nutrients necessary for healthy skin. Herbal extracts help with pigmentation inhibition, antioxidant capacity, and prevention of various skin conditions. Plant-based ingredients can repair skin damage and inhibit skin ageing (wrinkling). As well as this, organic skin care ingredients tend to be biodegradable and less harmful to the environment.
Contrastingly, conventional skin products usually use chemicals and synthetic ingredients. These can cause a variety of undesirable effects, such as skin irritation or inflammation. What are these side effects and what ingredients should consumers avoid?
The Potential Side Effects of Certain Synthetic Ingredients
The use of synthetic products has been associated with a wide range of illnesses, including cancers, respiratory conditions and endocrine disruptions.
In winter, it is important to moisturize the skin more frequently. However, there are some ingredients that should be avoided. According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, there are many ingredients put into conventional moisturizers that may be harmful. While polyacrylamide is not in itself harmful, it may cause acrylamide contamination, which can damage DNA tissues. Petrolatum can lead to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contamination, which can cause skin irritation, eye irritation or nausea. UV filters may be put into moisturizers, which can damage vitamin D synthesis, however, it is important to check that these filters are non-toxic to avoid skin bleaching chemicals. Polytetrafluoroethylene can induce perfluorooctanoic contamination. In turn, this can cause damage in the liver, kidney or thyroid, and can lead to cancer with constant exposure (i.e., through repeated use of products with this chemical).

How to Protect and Nourish The Skin In Colder Months
There are many ways we can protect and nourish our skin in the winter, through various steps and specific skincare products. Research has shown that using a humidifier, limiting the time spent showering and covering the skin (where possible) can reduce dryness. Staying hydrated and using patting techniques to dry the skin can also help keep the skin moisturized.
When choosing skin products, opting for heavier and organic skin products are preferred in the winter. Moisturizing frequently can prevent skin irritation and dryness. In a recent review, it was noted that plant-based oils like coconut, olive, argan, and jojoba have natural emollients and vital fatty acids that hydrate and moisturize the skin. They can shield the skin’s surface and may reduce moisture loss. Argan oil contains many antioxidants, vital fatty acids, and vitamin e, while jojoba oil is an excellent moisturizer and conditioner. Similarly, another review discussed how cocoa and shea butter provide a protective layer that prevents water from drying out/evaporating and can keep the skin smooth. This is from their high content of fatty acids which can protect the skin more thoroughly than alternative products. However, when choosing these products, it is important to check that they are fair-trade certified, to ensure that the product was made in compliance with the region’s economic and social standards.
Clearly, consumers are leaning towards organic, natural and plant-based skincare products. There are many ways that we can protect the skin in winter. Through natural, organic and plant-based products, consumers can avoid more harmful chemicals and maintain soft, moisturized skin.
